"She'll be Back" - The Job Interview

It was only a couple days prior to this contest closing that I found out about it. I watched all 9 entries for the "funniest job interview video" on integritycareertransitions.com and thought... now here's a cash grab. So quickly as I could I slapped together a script, arranged a location, grabbed some student actors from the drama department(Darren Russell and Paula Amor) and pulled out the HV20.

This is basically how it went down.

- I shot it from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.
- Captured from 5:30pm to 6:00pm.
- Edited from then till about 10:00pm.
- Rendered/exported until 11:00pm.
- Uploaded from 11:15 untill 12:30am.
- Submitted it at 12:35... barely on time.

and exhausted, went to bed with no dinner and no homework done.

All in all, I have never done a project in such a short amount of time and had almost nothing go wrong. Other then a few continuity errors, that seem to go un-noticed, the project was a success. Now I just hope justice prevails and the grand prize of 1,000 dollars is mine.

iFart Hot Tub Commercial Entry

Just over a month ago I became aware of the iFart Video Commercial contest. I checked out the contest details and browsed a few of the video entries. I noticed all the entries were hand held, poorly lit, and not very funny so I immediately became interested.

You'd probably agree with me when I say "I think the ifart application for the ipod is completely ridiculous" but the grand prize of $5,000 was what caught my eye. So I started throwing ideas around at my family, friends, and teachers and they started throwing ideas back at me. Through discussion with my parents I came up with the interesting location of a "hot tub" or "jacuzzi". I then brought this idea to my teacher who liked the location and thought it would be smart if some guy in the hot tub used the ifart application to get other guys out of the tub and get the girls alone. Hence putting forth the concept "guy uses ifart to get girls", a fairly effective way to advertise a product I thought. So pre-production began!

I talked to a friend of mine in film class who immediately took huge interest in my idea. We discussed locations and friends as actors and made some rough decisions. I ended up talking to another friend of mine, Josh, who jumped on board and volunteered his hot tub as the set as long as he was cast in the commercial. From there I grabbed friends from within the peer group and proposed my idea to each one of them. All being slightly naive to the stress, time, and tediousness involved in shooting even a small commercial lasting under a minute, jumped on board instantly and excitingly.

I worked out the script, chose my shots, and looked towards scheduling a date roughly one quarter the way into April with a contest entry deadline of April 30th in mind. Everyone in my group decided that one friday, right after school, was the only time they could all be available. So we set that down in cement and went for it.

That friday rolled around and we shot the entire thing in less then three and a half hours. Everything went perfectly smooth however at about two hours into things my actors all began to understand the time it really took to complete a small production even when rushed. After all was said and done I took the footage home and captured it from my HV20 to the computer. I remember throwing the footage in premiere, doing a rough edit and thinking immediately "oh #$%@, this is crap." But, I worked with it, re-edited, worked with it more, added music and.... bam! Suddenly, it wasn't so bad anymore, it was even somewhat.. entertaining.

I finished just in time and threw it on youtube, facebook, vimeo, etc. So far it's been a hit, but I'll find out June 1st how it truly stands up against the competitors videos when the iFart Judging Panel places the videos. There are about three or four "solid entries" I'm competing against so it will be interesting to see who is announced the winner.
